It is with the eyes of your heart you will read the special Guatemala issue of The Little Slice, whose unique content was created by the fertile pens of 12 young Guatemalans, age 9 to 14.

All have sad stories and could easily have become marginalized. In 1998, The New Roots Foundation in Antigua welcomed them, allowing them to escape the horrible end that awaits millions of street children. The organization protects, shelters, heals, feeds and educates them. The Foundation plans to continue its enormous task until they are adults.

When they arrived at the Colegio Crecer, each child spoke one of the 26 indigenous languages still spoken in Guatemala. Their school days take place in English and Spanish and give importance to sports, arts and computers.

Their rich, stimulating curriculum prepares them to face a harsh reality where they will play a cataclysmic role for a suffering and abused society.

While reading the article titled Help our community, you will see the gears in motion for the training of future decision-makers.

Their philanthropic education teaches them solidarity and sensitizes them to the obligation to give back to society some of the quality teachings they received. These girls benefit from an incredible chance; they know it and show us that all children on Earth can be educated, whatever their background.

140 member countries of the United Nations are involved in a project to school all children by 2015. Coming soon

Childrens Education our passion

The Gingerbread Guild urges People with a Heart to forge with them a chain of friendship linking all the children of The Global Village.

Education is the only peaceful way to build a worldwide community living in peace and harmony with the environment, and with mutual respect for the freedom of all its citizens.

Only children exposed to democracys pluralist values will know how to build a better world, one that is coherent and ethical and that stresses the importance of tolerance, of asking questions and of generosity. Together, they will be able to overcome the problems created and made worse by hatred and violence in all their forms. They will create a world of peace.

The Guild reiterates its commitment towards children everywhere, and is fully conscious of the fact that it will not be an easy task in the face of widespread ignorance and apathy.

The Guild will support the decision-makers of tomorrow by offering them the means to acquire information that is free from social and religious prejudices.

Did you know that you all have the stuff investers and builders are made of?

Dreaming of a better world is already a step in the right direction, but taking on the task of rebuilding it is indeed a complex choice, one which demands some serious consideration.

All of us, according to our experience, availability or idea of a mission to accomplish can share our qualities, skills, talents, financial resources or network of contacts. Great or small, any endeavour to help children counts. The more constant and enduring our efforts, the more efficient our action.

By means of The Gingerbread Guild, we morally assume the responsibility to eliminate childrens illiteracy, because we acknowledge the extent of the scourge that ignorance is and we are determined to find remedies for it.

Our commitment to fill the gaps in our system of education involves a direct contact with children in order to give them the desire to learn, so that we may fight effectively against the pernicious symptoms of a destructive situation.

The Pleasure of Words presented to children.

Becoming involved deep down in our hearts and financially supporting The Gingerbread Guild belongs to the realm of conviction, enthusiasm and generosity; it is the sign of our desire for justice; it is he proof that we fully adhere to the greatest of tasks: the betterment of the human condition.

In short, it is playing our personal part, however small, the part that makes the difference, fights cynicism, promotes common action and allows us not to lose heart when faced with the vastness of our mission.

When investing in a social venture such as The Gingerbread Guild, you may not obtain material profit, but you will certainly feel a deep philanthropic satisfaction in becoming investers and builders.
In the name of all children, thank you.

The Guilds Raison dtre

Relying on a long and rich experience in education, teachers, communication experts, writers, artists and business professionals decided to realise a dream in establishing:

The Gingerbread Guild. Why is this dream called The Guild and not simply an association? Because it is a very ancient word dating from the Middle Ages used to describe a group of professionals of the same trade, like guilds for bakers, pastry makers and of course the makers of gingerbread.

With the gingerbread man as our symbol and gingerbread as the essential product used to promote our cause it was logical that we would become The Gingerbread Guild.

Current research into the state of the educational system in Qubec and Canada has revealed that 48% of the population suffers from functional illiteracy even though education at both primary and secondary levels is obligatory.

How can we explain this dramatic statistic and who are these functional illiterates?

According to Canada Post, which has adopted literacy as a national cause, functional illiterates are adults who are unable to complete a simple application form, or read correctly a label on a medical prescription.

Intellectual poverty aligned with material needs affects an increasing percentage of our population. The contradiction between the expansion in economic growth and the rapid development of an intellectual mediocrity is striking and obliges us to act.

The Gingerbread Guild has chosen to become involved in this struggle on a preventive basis via the youngest and most endangered sector of our society: our children. Although we cannot ignore the problems of our illiterate adult population there are already numerous competent organisations involved in the fight to bring adults rich and poor back from the abyss of illiteracy. It would be nave to think that this problem lies only with the poorer members of society.

ILLITERACY KNOWS NO FRONTIERS

An article published recently in La Presse, titled One child in four threatened by illiteracy in Qubec confirms that if this lamentable situation is not addressed immediately then 25% of our future adult population risks joining the ranks of drop outs and in the long term these adults will become totally dependent on the already degrading social safety net.

In an effort to stem this insidious trend, The Gingerbread Guild has selected various avenues of activity the principle one being our programme ALPHA which consists of two distinct activities:

* The distribution of childrens literature, in particular that targeted at pre-school age and first-time readers.

* Culinary/literary workshops with an emphasis on a healthy and balanced diet where the child discovers the world of spices and the various spice routes, in particular the long voyage of Gingerbread itself from its beginnings in China in the 10th century via the crusades of the middle ages culminating in its place in the occidental societies of today.

Our activities take place in schools, community centres, hospitals, libraries, book fairs, and family gatherings. In short anywhere a reasonably large group of children can be assembled.

We believe that there exists an absolute imperative to intervene and aid our existing educational institutions to fight the creeping menace of illiteracy. It is essential to instil in the very youngest elements of our population the pleasures of learning by reading.

Only then can we defeat the drop out phenomenon and safeguard our children from a slide into ignorance and ultimately, dependence.

Stimulating activities like the ones The Gingerbread Guild offers will nurture the childs self-esteem, his desire to learn and to create, to mention only a few of the important elements needed to become a balanced person.

A lovely letter written by Mrs. Lise Thibault,
the godmother of The Gingerbread Guild

Mrs. Lise Thibault

At this start of the year, we are pleased to share with you PEOPLE WITH HEART a lovely letter written by Mrs. Lise Thibault, the godmother of The Gingerbread Guild. We are all honoured by her confidence.

Your love of art and letters inspired you one day to want to share, with the help of magical gingerbread dust, all their riches. To this end you decided to privilege children, hoping to provide them with a magnificent gift for life, an auspicious heritage that will grow with them always.

Your desire is a direct consequence of your love, which is fruitful and generous. So, you worry about those for whom letters dont manage to deliver their message. Helping to fight illiteracy in the world provides the key to freedom; freedom to express oneself, to communicate, to understand, to know, to defend oneself.

For all the little gingerbread ladies and gentlemen, may all let themselves be nourished by the goodwill of your organization.

It was my delicious pleasure to visit you!

Lise Thibault
Lieutenant-gouverneur of Qubec

A message to you

A message to you, people who believe there is magic in life, who multiply reading opportunities, who share your favorite authors confidences, who consult learned works, who read stories to children , curious about everything in general and nothing in particular, who decipher complex formulas: Do you realize that you are quite privileged?

In Quebec, one million adults are functional illiterates and cannot decode simple texts (medicine labels, directions, etc.), thus being all the more unable to share your passion for reading.

The more we are aware of this sad reality, the more appalled we are. Obviously, it is of the utmost importance to find solutions to this insidious problem which is slowing down mankinds evolution.

Children are never too young to be introduced to images and stories. If a child senses the interest of parents for reading, he will be naturally inclined to do the same.
Here, puzzled 5-month-old Shane Shepherd wonders what the scribblings of The Gingerbread Slice mean...

Moreover, it is sheer nonsense that this should be possible in Canada, an industrialized country where school is mandatory until the age of 16. This situation is many-faceted, and expensive studies havent yet reached below the surface of the problem. Learning difficulties appear very early in children: One must therefore learn to recognize their problems, want to correct them, and find the means to do so.

In spite of the fact that parents, teachers, psychologists and social workers support and help children on a regular basis, we have no choice but to admit our failure as a society.

Human beings learn in different ways, at their own pace and possess various forms of intelligence*. The Gingerbread Guild acknowledges this fundamental reality: In its interactive workshops, it advocates games and the exploration of the senses.

These workshops appeal not only to the childrens five senses, but also to their imagination, a marvellous tool of creativity which, when positively used, can produce masterpieces and abolish frontiers.

Since we aim to promote an active learning process, we want the children to be a part of the editorial team of The Little Gingerbread Slice. This participation will enable them to develop ideas and projects in an atmosphere of genuine trust.

With you, we have no doubt that the children will rediscover the pleasure of reading and writing: In one word, the taste of freedom!

They just get better!

Fair Trade, born 50 years ago in Africa and Europe in order to fight the iniquity of low market prices for the African producer highly dependent on unscrupulous intermediaries, Fair Trade is now an important international system of doing business based on principles of respect, equity and transparency.

Its effects are far-reaching for small-scale farmers, small producer organizations, hired labour, consumers and the environment. In this short presentation, we simply want to inform you of the aspects of Fair Trade that are especially related to The Guilds mission.

    1. For small-scale farmers and small producer organizations: better social services (housing, health care and education); technical training and skill diversification for cooperative members and their families; non-discrimination; community development.

    2. For hired labour: no forced or child labour; freedom of association and collective agreements; equitable salaries; safe workplace.

    3. For consumers: option of ethical purchasing according to their values; opportunity to be players in the solution to global trade inequities; high quality products.

    4. For the environment: farm management systems that minimize pollutants, pesticides and herbicides; banning the use of dangerous pesticides; organic agriculture techniques.

Finally, every aspect of the Fair Trade system must get a Certification, under strict conditions, from Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO), which certifies and monitors producer groups, and registers importers of Fair Trade Certified products.

To conclude, we believe The Guild and its members can be justifiably proud to be a part of this noble system.

S.O.S. - Share Our Strength

American writer Bill Shore is fighting hard against poverty in the United States. In 1984, he founded, with his sister Debbie, Share Our Strength (S.O.S.), an organization which develops new ways to distribute wealth.

Believing that our talents are our most precious possessions, Bill Shore invites us to spread to all those around us, near or far, our incredible power to change situations.

S.O.S.'s top priority is long-term change, brought about by the commitments of individuals through tutoring, teaching, mentoring or any other type of intervention favouring interaction between people who are committed to the pursuit of a changed society.

In his book Revolution of the Heart, Bill Shore is particularly hard on what he believes has been the failure of our democratic system in the struggle against poverty. Ironically this very system is the pride of North Americans.

Although on the surface one might be impressed by the billions of dollars our governments spend to counter the appalling situation of many of our fellow citizens, it is an inescapable fact that in spite of these efforts the deadly trio of war, poverty and illiteracy continues its progress relatively unchecked.

The author proposes therefore to reform and breathe new life into existing social programmes by involving every citizen in a project for a new society. Giving huge sums to momentarily relieve the symptoms of one specific problem is a band aid solution that is no longer enough; every single one of us needs to offer our talents.

You may think you have little to offer. Wrong! Your competence in any field makes you essential to the building of a better world.

In The Cathedral Within, Bill Shore enthusiastically compares his project with the Utopian dream of the building of cathedrals. True, the task was colossal, and many did not live to witness its completion, but the cathedrals were completed and today we look at them in awe and admire the faith and work that built them.

Bill's own talent is his ability to both gather and then distribute to the needy vast sums of money, thanks to the involvement of thousands of individuals working within socially committed large corporations, each individually using his or her own talents.

Throughout the ages, idealists have wanted to change the world; some have succeeded, but clearly not enough. It's time we all tried again. However, a word of warning: we are the targets of cynicism and we must guard ourselves against it. According to Bill Shore, "Cynicism is the enemy of any positive change because it neutralizes creative thinking, destroys the very idea that change is possible and paralyses the desire to act."

Thus warned, we can combat this intruder... our own way. You already know that nobody can resist a sprinkle of Magical Gingerbread Dust so it is easy for The Gingerbread Guild to subscribe to the goals of Share Our Strength.

The children who concern Bill Shore and The Guild are not simply at risk, they are already wounded. This final thought of Bill Shore's should inspire us to act promptly.

The story he has to tell is not a fairy tale, and will not leave you indifferent

When he was 12, this Torontonian went on a journey through Southern Asia where he was confronted with childrens slavery. Upon his return, he decided to create the Free the Children foundation. Managed by children only, it is now established in more than 20 countries.

In order to have a feeling of what he witnessed, one must read his book Free the Children, written in collaboration with Kevin Major. More than 250 million children are living in absolute hell. To survive, they are literally condemned to hard labour. They are shamelessly exploited: physically, mentally, morally and sexually. They are treated worse than cattle. Some are chained to machines, others carry heavy loads of bricks or stones; lets not forget those who handle dangerous matters, nor all those who are drugged, whipped, even killed.

Before leaving Toronto, Craig guessed he would witness terrible situations, but he felt he had to see them for himself. The horror was beyond imagination. So he decided he would devote his life to the defence of childrens rights.

Two countries havent yet adhered to the Charter of Childrens Rights: the U.S.A. (are you really surprised?) and Somalia. However, lets remain extremely vigilant: it has been proven that certain countries, which have adhered to the Charter, do not actually implement it.

One of the consequences of these shocking facts is that the young slaves are denied the right to education. Among them, 140 million, between the ages of 6 and 11, are prevented to go to school; two thirds of them are girls. Faced with such a proof of humanitarian failure, The Guild has indeed a lot of Gingerbread on its plate.

Poverty and ignorance are the main reasons for the enslavement of children, which is perpetuated from generation to generation. Furthermore, silence is a very efficient weapon to ensure the persistence of this exploitation. We must put a stop to it, even though there seems to be no way out of this infernal maze of social tyranny maintained as it is by the lucrative child labour trade, their forced enrolment in armies, their sexual slavery. Obviously, parents in general would not sell their children if they could earn a decent income, and if they were better informed about the too often irrevocable consequences of their decisions.

Craig could not bear that situation, so he totally committed himself to his task, at an age where other teenagers are finding there own identity. Because of his exceptional maturity, we are compelled to ask ourselves what our responsibilities and duties are towards the victims of society.

True, we are technically very advanced, but very few inhabitants of the global village can gain anything by it. It does seem that the evolution of humanity is still in its infancy.

The Guild has chosen to work against illiteracy and for the education of all children, quite simply because education is the key to change todays tragic course of events.

In a near future, the roads of Free the Children, with its friendship schools, and of The Gingerbread Guild will certainly meet to make a difference for those children.

I am very much inspired by such a valorous young mentor (Craig is now 19), and I firmly believe in the power of youth to influence the future, since the future belongs to them.

Help The Guild to help them.
